Richard Jack was born February 1866,
in Sunderland England. He studied at the Academie Julian in Paris, France. Jack
was a master of color and form which he showed through his paintings. He painted
in a variety of styles including Portraits, figure subjects and landscapes. He became
one of Canada’s first war artists during the First World War. He was able to utilize
large canvases which shows in his 12-by-20 foot The Second Battle of Ypres painting. Before becoming a war artist
Jack painted portraits of Royalty, subjects such as King Edward Vll, King
George V and King Alphonso of Spain. Jack also became a member of the Royal

to the Front: Victoria Railway Station shows soldiers before they are
thrown back into the war. Through all the commotion, one soldier sits deep in
thought. Is he thinking about the battlefield of which he may fall, or the
loved ones he’s had to leave behind? This painting shows a variety of emotion. Soldiers
having a taste of home before heading back out to the front.
